Synopsis
Follow Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as they have a long-running rivalry that comes to a head. The same location was also used to film Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC TV adaptation of Poldark. In the 90s there was Jilly Cooper’s appalling version of Riders, as TV had avoided her since then ' bonkbusters' critics considered Jilly Cooper’s novels dated and silly.
Its triumph, however, is that it has the budget and time to do justice to the feeling and spirit of the original book
It’s far from the truth, Cooper satirizes the upper middle class of the Cotswolds with iron wit and has always had an understanding of comedy, character and funny plots. In many ways, his work is more like Restoration Comedy than Carry On, where the characters have more development and more inner lives than you expect. Now comes RIVALS from Disney which boasts a great cast and the good news is that it' ; is a great watch, yes it’s full of naughty moments and titties and titties, even the occasional willy.
He is doing a really meritorious job
The changes are minor and actually open up more of the period and politics. Bella Maclean is great in the central role of Tagie and Alex Hassel does a great job as Rupert, a role that is impossible to give because no one in history can be a character. which Cooper created – part villain, part Adonis, part whiny child.
I really liked it
The real star of this, however, is the ensemble cast of wonderful character actors Emily Atack, Danny Dyer and Katherine Parkinson, all of whom give career-best performances. The 80s soundtrack is on point throughout and makes Rivals a real win for Disney. It’s fun, it’s frothy, but it has a deeper foundation that elevates it above the signature movie and offers hope that we’ll see a lot more of this team and this universe in the future.
